Cantera stone is a uniquely quarried, volcanic rock that is mined exclusively
in various regions of Mexico and Central America. It is perfectly engineered
by nature as a medium for use in building. Its properties are unique, in that
it offers color, texture, durability, and best of all, a softness that allows
for detailed carving and cutting. It is used in hotels, shopping malls, office
buildings, and custom homes throughout the U.S. Cantera comes in a myriad of
natural colors and tones, and its texture is truly beautiful. It sports unique
inclusions and color flecks, making its authenticity easy to see, and gives a
natural, eternal feel. Cantera is durable, and has stood for centuries in many
cathedrals, haciendas and other buildings throughout Latin America.
Thin slabs of stone used for flagging or paving walks, driveways, patios, etc.
It is generally fine-grained sandstone, bluestone, quartzite or slate, but thin
slabs of other stones may be used.
A fine to coarse-grained, igneous rock formed by volcanic action consisting of
quartz, feldspar, and mica, with accessory minerals. Granite-type rocks included
those of similar texture and origin.
A sedimentary rock composed of calcium carbonate; includes many varieties
(see oolitic limestone, dolomitic limestone, crystalline limestone.) Recrystallized
limestone and compact, dense, relatively pure microcrystalline varieties that are
capable of taking a polish are included in commercial marbles.
A metamorphic recrystallized limestone composed predominantly of crystalline grains
of calcite or dolomite, or both, having interlocking or mosaic texture, marble.
A crystalline form, commonly micro crystalline, of calcium carbonate deposited
usually from cold-water solutions. It is generally translucent and shows a
characteristic layering.
A sedimentary rock consisting usually of quartz, cemented with silica, iron
oxide or calcium carbonate, Sandstone is durable, has a very high crushing and
tensile strength and a wide range of colours and textures.
A form of limestone precipitated from ground waters as in caves or in orifices
of springs (see limestone).
